Sad But True, Money Ruined My Relationship

Can money buy you happiness? On second thought, forget that. Here’s the million-dollar question; does money change you or it just reveals who you really are?

“Money may be the root cause of all evil, but neither does being broke make you holy.” You might have come across this rather interesting quote that often sanctifies the fact that money changes your personality. This is mostly not for the better. Money and marriage is usually not an all rosy affair. Do you need any proof? It is the second leading cause of divorce! Don’t ask me to cite my sources, just look at relationships around you.

Money In A Marriage: Martha Wilds Out

“I am traveling to Dubai this weekend with a couple of friends.” Martha who has been fixated on her bathroom vanity suddenly says.

A tense silent moment passes.

“Did you hear what I just said?” She adds in almost a shrill.
“Are you asking or saying?” Derrick her husband responds.
“It doesn’t matter; just know I will be out of the country for a few days.”

In a stern voice, Derick says, “Who are these friends you are traveling with anyway?”
“Don’t start again,” Martha says. “You like creating mountains out of…”
“Never mind” as he walks out of the room.

“Don’t forget to pay the rent on time.” She adds almost shouting. “I don’t care if you have to take a loan. I am tired of dealing with embarrassing calls from the agent every month about unpaid rent.”

This has been the dance in their marriage for 2 years or so now. It all started, when she got that big job promotion. Her respect for him has since then been dwindling by the day.

He partly blames himself. He hasn’t been making enough to support the lifestyle of his family. And probably the fact that he hangs with his buddies in the bar longer, and more often than he should.

He used to wear the pants in the relationship, but not anymore. Not since her salary grew 3.763 times bigger than his. This income inequality has driven a huge wedge between them.

He tries though. He makes enough to pay rent (the thought of this figure makes his stomach turn), fuel their two cars and pays school fees for their two kids in a prestigious private school.

Did I mention he had no clue how she spends her close to seven figure income? Not that he’s too proud to ask, but because it is an ego-bruising battle he’s lost too many a time.

They had to move houses since it no longer fitted, their… oops I mean her class. The kid’s schools too. She now detests their old couple friends. She says they are jealous, and always try to ride on their success wave.

She has changed friends. Now she hangs out with ‘classier, empowered, independent and more outgoing’ friends. She recommends him to borrow a leaf as well and maybe it’ll help him beat the stagnation in his life.

Talking of outs, they are barely halfway through the year, yet this is the fourth time she’s going for vacay with her ‘friends’ to some far country.

Derrick no longer tries to control or reason with her. He’s traveled that road too many times already. I am talking about heated arguments, that often graduate to insults followed by slaps, bites, fists, kicks, projectiles, knives, screams…

She used to bring the best out of him, but now all she does is bring out his worst. This is the reason why; he opted not to confront her when he learned about her affair with one of her bosses.

It has hit him that their marriage is a lost cause. For now, he needs the peace to work on the exit strategy that will have as little collateral damage as possible. This not only includes shielding his children from the effects of the impending breakup but also protecting his feelings and dignity.

He’s now on the lookout for a woman who will respect him once more. Money and marriage have turned out to be Derrick’s worst nightmare.
