I had quite a smooth pregnancy with minimal complications. It is only during the third trimester I struggled with the lingering feeling of exhaustion. Sex during pregnancy was phenomenal, until the point where it got awkward. I hoped to bounce back to having sex after baby as soon as possible.
Too Eager to get Over with It
Enter the delivery process. The hospital sent me home four times because I had not dilated enough. I really wanted to have a natural birth.
My friends had mentioned that it would help me bounce back to my normal life really fast. I was elated to see photos of mothers (some celebrities) who had managed to get their sexy back within a month or so of giving birth.

When labor eventually started, it was tiring, painful, long and rough. It dragged on for 14 hours or so. I managed to have a natural birth just as I had planned; though I suffered tears, heavy periods and soreness.
Sex After Baby
4 weeks after delivery, my husband was more than ready to get jiggy again. I could understand why. It had been then three months and counting since we had intercourse.
On my part, I felt maxed out, overwhelmed, sore and desperate for sleep. The baby had been keeping me on my toes all day and night.
My postpartum body too wasn’t ready to join the party. My breasts that once were my erogenous zones were now leaking breastmilk. I didn’t want him touching them. It felt awkward.
The saggy belly and the stretch marks that had raided my body also didn’t help me feel anything close to a sex goddess! Trust me, these are not the perfect conditions for a rambunctious sex life.
Why I regret Having sex so soon?
Eventually, I caved in to his relentless ‘puppy-eyed’ requests. He justified that he knew a lot of people who had started much earlier without experiencing any complications. Unfortunately, the decision to have sex too soon is one I came to regret.
Besides struggling to get my Mojo back, the sex was uncomfortable. At first, I felt a strange nudging sensation before it became outright painful.
Little did I know that the worst was yet to come. I contracted a series of infections, that were accompanied by foul-smelling heavy discharges.
According to the gynecologist, the pain was caused by unhealed stitches made to fix the 2nd-degree tearing I got while giving birth. Intercourse also introduced bacteria to the uterus which caused the infections. This is because the cervical canal that prevents such bacteria from reaching the uterus had not closed yet.
How we got back on track?
One of the best decisions we made was to see a gynecologist immediately we suspected something was amiss. I underwent several tests and was later diagnosed with uterus infection.
I had to take medication for a month or so. My husband was also treated to avoid further infections. We were also advised to avoid intercourse for another month to allow for healing and also avoid reinfection.
What I learned from my sex after the birth Experience
Though six weeks is the recommended sex after baby wait time, it is important to understand that women heal at different rates. While some are able to raid the kitchen the next day to whip up some delicious pancakes, others need weeks of bed rest.
The six-week period is not a sex after the birth starting line. It is a just a biological time frame. Which means, some might be ready by then, while others are not.
I was lucky because my husband accompanied me to these sessions. He was able to understand why we could no longer have sex.
Now I have gotten my mojo back, sex after baby it good as it ever was; thanks to the fact that I am completely healed and the baby now sleeps sound. I also do Kegel excises to get my muscles down there as tight as they used to be.
