Everything was happening fast. It was just the other day she was tossing in the bed at night wondering why Mr. Right was taking his sweet time to find her. Occasionally, she touched herself to calm her tickled nerves or just to lull herself to sleep.
I know what your self-righteous pharisaic mind is thinking. “What?? Can’t a lonely and dissolute lady enjoy a few life’s guilty pleasures in peace?” She was convinced the man above would turn the other cheek on this one; else he might as well watch.
Now she was about to walk down the aisle; they have been working against her bulging baby bump clock. This put their decision-making skills in the balance.
Talking of clocks, her biological one had pushed her over the past couple of years to a point she could audaciously hit on a man.
She was beautiful, ambitious, independent, educated, had a decent job, loyal, God-fearing (simply a jackpot for any man) …yet somehow she couldn’t get one man to act right. All they wanted was a happy ending that lasted a few minutes, not even a night.
This reminded her of the fight she had with her friend after she made a rather bad joke; “Maybe you are intimidating your suitors because you have your life too figured out.”
What was really intimidating for her was getting this man to act right after she had wrapped him between her thighs and his seed growing in her belly.
Her aunt, who has been her guardian for the past 11 years, was somewhat opposed to their upcoming union. She has been bombarding her with questions and words of wisdom ever since the day she introduced Mike to her.
“So what does, Mike do?” Her aunt asked.
“He’s a gospel musician,” She replied. What she didn’t say is that the boy quit college 6 years ago to pursue, his music career. Yet to date, he’s only managed to release two songs nobody has ever heard of.
Did I mention that she later discovered that the magnificent apartment where he got her ovaries fertilized was not his? He actually lived in a single room in the ghetto which he shared with a friend.
She visited his place once, and she has never gone back there. It was a dump! She was on the blink of throwing up! It’s such a shame because if you bumped into Mike in town, you’d think he’s the CEO of Money Inc. thanks to his bespoke suits.
Eventually, he moved into her apartment, which was comfortable enough to raise a family.
“What about his parents? Who are they, and where are they?” Her aunt pressed on.
“They live upcountry; he doesn’t talk much about them.” She responds.
The truth is that his parents didn’t care what he did he did with his life. His father was a drunkard who to date physically abuses Mike’s mother, who has dementia, which is suspected to be caused by the long term abuse.
The memory of the first and the only time she met Mike’s dad is still fresh in her mind. He was short, had a somewhat frail body, a wrinkled face, sunken eyes, gray hair, and a loud, hoarse mouth.
As she shook his leathery, weather-beaten firm hand, his eyes were all over her, almost lustfully. In his drunken stupor, he scoffed, “How did this lucky bastard land such a fine lady?” This was followed up by hoarse spasms of laughter that left her pretty shook and spits of his stenchy saliva all over her face.
Her aunt asked her a million other questions which she answered tactfully to negotiate her disapproving attitude.
“I know why you will marry the wrong person Miriam,” her aunt suddenly said.
“What do you mean mom?” She usually calls her mom.
Her aunt goes on. “I know you have a big heart just like your mother did. Always seeing the best in people. However, instead of appreciating people like you, the world tends to take advantage of them.”
Miriam replied, as long as there is love, we can conquer everything. She was pretty convinced that once they settle into their marriage, she would fix Mike to become a responsible, hardworking man.
Ritually, they had to go through a pre-marital counseling class before their wedding. They were slapped with a 5-page long questionnaire that was asking general and rather privy questions.
One question really took her aback. “How many sexual partners have you had in your life?’ She would be damned if she answered that right.
For the first time, she was tempted to do a quick count, and count she did. However, she brushed off the idea after the numbers added up swiftly past the teens, towards the 20’s and yet the count seemed far from over.
Though she would have loved a glam wedding, they settled for a simple one due to financial constraints. Her aunt financed the entire wedding because Mike was still in financial gutters.
They had barely come back from their honeymoon before their marriage problems started. She started getting texts from a woman claiming to be pregnant by Mike.
All he did was Deny! Deny! Deny! When she investigated further, it turned out to be true. She was devastated especially now that she too was now 5 months pregnant.
“I thought you were a God-fearing Man?” She asked in a fit of tears. He apologized countless times, blamed the devil, and said she’s the only one she loved. She forgave on condition that he would keep his baby mama drama out of their marriage.
Their relationship problems were far from over. She hated the fact that her pregnant self would wake up at 5:00 AM, to go to fend for a grown ass man who she left curled between the warm blankets and would spend the rest of the day playing video games or hanging out with his boys when not in church practicing for the choir.
The fact that she was the one with the money was such a hot potato. He had tried countless times to get her to quit her job, claiming that he had a plan to get a big break in his music career that would make them millionaires.
The last straw was drawn when she was almost 8 months pregnant. This was when she discovered that he had two more baby mamas that he had skipped to mention from the church he previously attended.
A heated argument ensued. I guess the demons were on the prowl that day. “You are a man whore and a dead beat father who can’t even fend for himself,” She screamed.
“Who’s the bigger whore now? You think I don’t know you dress nicely to go impress men at work!” He responded angrily.
Both parties hurled a couple of more damaging insults; amidst this vulgary, he snapped. He banged her head against the wall, not once, or twice but a couple of times. She didn’t even get the chance to scream. Kicks, blows, slaps…followed until the lights started to fade.
He then grabbed her limp pregnant body by her hair and dragged it across the room and left it outside her apartment for the dead.
She woke up in the hospital having been in and out of a coma for 17 hours. Unfortunately, despite all the efforts of the doctors, she lost the baby. She went berserk.
She was put under anesthesia for as long as possible and later placed under psychiatric care. Mike was in the wind to date. If he gets arrested, he will be charged with attempted murder.
A year later, while seated on the balcony chatting with her aunt, she asked, “How did you miss all those red flags?” I even tried to tell you directly when I said you I know why you will marry the wrong person.
“I was in love, ma, I was in love,” Miriam replied in a calm voice.
“I am not trying to rub it on your face, my daughter,” she went on. “I think you were just in love with the idea of getting married and now look at the huge price you paid?”
